As a new sports building landmark in the near future and an active popular sports park of Shanghai, Xujiahui Sports Park has attracted great attention in the past year. Many famous media have made detailed report to the project, while HPP, as the designer, also made deep report on the general and architecture design of the project. Now, this article is taking another perspective and focusing on the landscape design to introduce you a preview surprise!
The general layout of Xujiahui Sports Park appears the “One-Axis and Two-Wing” type, with three areas from north to south, including Relaxing Park, Professional Events Axis and Sports Park. Landscape design fully cooperates with the planning form, with the optimization of competition axis and Event Plaza, improvement of outdoor fitness and leisure space, integration of natural landscape, and connection among different areas through internal and external double tracks while reserving existing functions of sports park.
“Spring Themed Park”: Based on the theme of Spring, flowers such as sakura, peach blossom and purple-leaf plum shall be planted to build a park of spring, and petal will be withdrew as landscape design factor, scattering on the ground, meanwhile, it will be applied on chairs and stepping stones, etc.
“Seasonal Park”: Based on the season change of Summer, Autumn, Winter, by taking “seasons” as the concept of this area, the designers are building a park with changeable four-season landscape, and withdraw wood and leaf as landscape design factors, creating a leisure and active place.

专业赛事轴 Professional Event Axis
赛事轴广场区是一条承载体育文化及赛事活动的中轴，自西向东分别为：西入口广场、庆典广场、东入口广场。
The Professional Event Axis is a middle axis for undertaking sports culture and competition events, with such plazas from west to east side as West Entrance Plaza, Event Plaza and East Entrance Plaza.
The overall design of the Event Plaza is derived from vertical facade texture reserved in building, extending to pavement design of the plaza, forming an overall axis from east to west. The plaza design takes consideration of competition days and daily activities, emphasizing the landmark and identifiability of Caoxi Road and Tianyaoqiao Road through instructive lamp standards, tree arrays and pavement, with effective combination of evacuate route. The blend of original torch statue and greening preserves the impression of original scene, and with temporary LED screen, thick external competition atmosphere can be created.
Sports Park mainly consists of Basketball Park, Football Park and Tennis Park, undertaking the popular sports function and providing citizens with outdoor ball games with high involvement. The appearance of special planting beds is developed from Shanghai Indoor Stadium. It extracts its characteristic of plane elliptical modeling as well as fluctuating facade, diversifying the dimension of planting beds.
Another feature of Basketball Park is the ground pavement. Designers adopt water permeable bricks of three kinds of surface of black, neutral grey and light grey surface in different dimensions and colors as pavement material, creating an interesting and active ground design.
