由GMP设计的苏州第二图书馆将于今年年内正式启用。

苏州第二图书馆位于苏州古城以北，具有教育和娱乐等复合功能，为国内新型图书馆又提供了一例佳作。除了传统图书馆的阅读功能，这座新馆还内置了若干特色阅览室，以及展览空间等文化设施。这座新图书馆将拥有国内首个大型自动化高架仓库图书存储系统，净高约15米的全自动高架仓库面积占6500平方米,藏书量达700万册。智能书库投用之后，库房能根据系统指令，自动调取出所需的书目，并投放到库区外的分拣传输线，通过分拣传输线，把书根据不同类别、不同需求，投放到指定区域，大大提高了运作效率。
Suzhou No. 2 Library locates north of the historic city center, it is an example for a new type of modern public library in China, with an attractive mix of education and entertainment functions. The new library will include areas for traditional library functions, with built-in feature libraries as well as other public functions, such as exhibition spaces. This new library building will also realize the first fully automated high-bay storage system for 7 million books in China, with an area of 6,500 sqm and a clear story height of approx. 15 m. With the intelligent storage system, the warehouse can automatically retrieve the required bibliography according to the system instructions, and deliver it to the sorting transmission line outside the storage area. Through the sorting transmission line, the book can be delivered to the designated area according to different categories and different needs, greatly improving the operational efficiency.

建筑突出的造型是由狭窄的场地限制和对公共空间的要求决定的，复合重叠的功能导向了紧凑的建筑体量。公共图书馆和书库这一虚一实两个体量间的公共空间，既明确了功能分区，也有助于组织入口及各个功能之间的动线，在围合的內院中，扩展为一个诗意的文化广场。
The building’s projecting shape was determined by the narrow site and the requirement for open public spaces. The overlapping of functions results in extremely compact volumes. In the gap between the public library building and the storage builidng, the public space is expanded to include an inner square, creating a poetic atmosphere. This gap not only serves to clearly differentiate the functions, but also helps organizing the entrances and uses.

图书馆雕塑感的造型从平行于周边街道的方形平面开始，向上逐层出挑并旋转，以便将周边景观引入室内。通过严格控制的水平分割和轻质铝百叶遮阳，实现了倾斜并逐渐旋转的立面效果，类似一摞旋转叠放的纸张和书籍。
Whereas the ground level with its minimal surface is square and runs parallel to the street, the upper stories expand outward and are rotated so as to provide views of the surrounding landscape. The part of the library façade that is skewed by this rotation is achieved technically by means of strict horizontal segmentation and shaded by light aluminum louvers, creating a clear resemblance to a skewed stack of papers and books. The translucent louvers provide filtered views and distinctive light radiation.

与公共图书馆透明的立面相对应，书库的外观设计，营造了一种坚固与安全的建筑形象。厚实的外墙设计采用水平线条肌理的清水混凝土，与上层的功能之间通过一个玻璃幕墙围合的露台隔开。混凝土表面的木纹肌理也为建筑带来了自然的气质。
In contrast with the transparent facade of the public library, the appearance of the storage building provides the image of a sturdy and safe place. The closed façade of the book storage area will comprise horizontally structured, exposed concrete separated from upper-layer functions by an inset glass façade with a terrace around the circumference. The surface of the fair-face concrete with wooden texture also brings the nature concept to the design.
新图书馆的北边还有一片开阔的绿地作为书香公园，提供了室外阅读休闲空间。建成后的整个地块，将成为苏州市北部的新地标和市民的新文化中心。
There is a huge park to the north of the library which provides leisure outdoor reading places. The complete plot will be a landmark in the north of Suzhou and become a new culture center for the citizen.
